No More Y-100????? No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Thank goodness that Radio One decided to switch Y-100’s format from the ever-popular Modern Rock format, to the overly-saturated hip hop format. The city of Philadelphia thanks you, Radio One. Why not add another one of these stations to this radio market, I mean, I think 5 hip hop stations wasn’t enough. Also, why would I want to have a variety of music to choose from on my radio dial. The city needed another hip hop station about as much as they needed another John Street Mayorial term.
Radio One has a very devious relationship with the city of Philadelphia. In the mid 1990’s, Radio One purchased 103.9, one of the coolest radio stations on the planet. This station played such a variety of alternative and cutting edge music, that for a “smaller” radio station, it gained a large cult following. Radio One decided that it was important to begin stifling the creativity by changing format to, you guessed it, hip hop and urban music.
Y-100, luckily, picked up some of the slack, but they were not nearly as great of a station as 103.9. They did, however, play great music, and had fantastic d.j.’s. In fact, my favorite morning show, up until two weeks ago, was the Preston and Steve show. But, Radio One forced them to move (thank goodness WMMR, in one of the few bright moves they’ve made since the 1980’s ended, hired Preston and Steve, and they will be resuming their show in 6 months).
Now, I get to choose between WMMR and WYSP, two stations that believe in “Nothing but Ozzie, Zeppelin, and Metallica, all day, all night.” Or, if I didn’t want to listen to that, I always have the option of listening to 101.1, 104.5, and 95.7, stations that believe that music “too soft is never enough.” These stations make it interesting during my morning drive to work, as I have to find new and exciting ways to stay awake. I can also listen to talk radio or sports talk, and let me tell you, I’m already full of enough hot air.
This is the first time I’ve ever considered satellite radio. Regular radio in Philadelphia is all but dead, unless one of these crap-shack radio stations like 101.1, 104.5, or 95.7 decides to do something smart and reintroduce modern rock to the city.
